The NEXT part-time Modular DELTA course will be from January 2011 to March, 2012

The Modular DELTA consists of three modules, each of which links into and supports the others. It is recommended to do them one at a time and in the order they are presented below.

UP Language Consultants does not offer the Distance DELTA.

Module One:

Dates:
January, 2011 to June, 2011
Sessions: Fortnightly input sessions taking place on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00

Your performance in Module 1 will be assessed by an exam (see date below) which consists of two papers of 90 minutes each with a 30 minute break between them.

Exam Date:
December 2011

Module Two:
Dates: July, 2011 – December, 2011

Your performance in Module 2 will be assessed by:
  • Written assignment - PDA - You must complete a 5000 word written assignment divided into two halves. The first half is a 2500 word evaluation of your own teaching practice, the second half a 2500 word evaluation of a teaching technique or method that is new to you.

  • 4 assessed teaching assignments - LSAs - You must teach 2 unassessed and 4 assessed lessons. Each teaching assignment is observed by a tutor and includes a 2500 word background written assignment. Your last teaching assignment will be externally assessed.

  • 10 peer observations  - You must observe 10 lessons of your fellow attendees' teaching. This invariably involves travelling around a bit.

Module Three:
Janaury, 2012 – March, 1012

Module Three consists entirely of a single written assignment of 4000-4500 words in which you design a course for a particular group of learners.

Registration

It is essential that candidates have plenty of free time, self discipline and a great deal of energy. It is recommended that potential candidates also have at least 4 years previous teaching experience with adult learners and a degree or pre-service teaching certificate, for example CELTA, or equivalent.

In order to ensure a place on the course you should complete and return the DELTA Application Form by the 1st of November, 2010. Late applications will be accepted after this date only if there are still places available.

How much experience do teachers need to take the DELTA modules?
The modules are for practicing teachers. Following is the guidance given regarding target candidature.

DELTA candidates will:
  • normally hold an initial teachng qualification (CELTA) enabling them to teach English in their own context
  • have a range of experience of teaching different levels in one or more contexts
  • have a level of written and spoken English which enables them to teach advanced level students (up to and including level C1 on the CEFR)
  • be able to research and present written assignments to the required standard

Can the modules be taken in any order?

It is important that courses are sufficiently long to allow for teacher development. There are 4 assessed lessons and a number of written assignments.

Each module assumes the knowledge and competence gained in the previous module(s). The usual order will be from Module One through to Module Three. Each module is separately certificated so this will allow candidates to receive credit for each module successfully completed. UP Language Consultants offers all three DELTA modules concurrently.

Attendance on a course will only be necessary for Modules One and Two so that practice can be directly assessed. Module Three can be entered for without taking a course.

What are the aims of the modular DELTA?
  • to enable candidates to acquire all three modules in stages over a period of time that can fit with career and other commitments
  • to provide the opportunity for DELTA candidates to focus on specialist teaching, e.g. teaching young learners, business English to encourage more flexible delivery, e.g. blended learning options

What is the focus of each of the three modules?
  • Module One focuses on the background to teaching and learning.
  • Module Two focuses on developing professional practice.
  • Module Three focuses on a specialist option (e.g. YL, ESOL, ESP, 1-1).
The examination questions in Module One will be set in a practical context and assume that candidates have a practical background. In Module Two assignments, candidates will need to analyse, explain and justify selected content and approaches taken. Module Three assessment is a practice based research project.

How is each module assessed?
  • Module One is assessed via a written examination.
  • Module Two is assessed via a portfolio of coursework, including observed lessons, written assignments, and an externally-assessed lesson observation.
  • Module Three is assessed via an extended written assignment.
The examination will consist of two papers taken on the same day with a break in between the two papers twice a year in June and December. There will be a one year referral period for Modules Two and Three.

Module Two candidates will be allowed to re-take the external assignment in one or both of the two following sessions. For example, a candidate who fails the coursework in December 2011 can re-enter for the external assessment in June 2012 or December 2012.

Module Three projects may be re-submitted on one occasion only in one of the two sessions following the original entry.
Candidates will receive a separate certificate for each module completed. The information provided on the back of each certificate will outline the aims and content of the module and how it fits into the DELTA modular framework.

Will the DELTA Modules have the same recognised status?

Yes. DELTA is widely recognized and valued and Cambridge ESOL will be working with stakeholders to capitalise on the advantages offered by the revised modular syllabus. The modular syllabus will offer greater transparency and flexibility as each module will be worth 20 credits (200 learning hours), allowing candidates, universities and other users to see more easily how DELTA fits in relation to other qualifications. Cambridge ESOL will actively pursue the extension of recognition for all three DELTA modules.

How will DELTA credits enable universities and other users to relate to the qualification?

The credits assigned to each module will indicate to universities the amount and level of learning undertaken to achieve each module. It will continue to be up to individual universities to allow transfer of credit. This will depend on the fit between DELTA modules and modules on university programmes.
